The strength of any animation program is based on the people involved in delivering a successful educational experience.
The Animation Programs have two full-time coordinators and a number of experienced part-time instructors who work in the local animation industry. As our courses are based on industry production practices, it’s important that we remain involved and current in the ever changing animation industry.
Jane – Program Assistant
Jane is the backbone of the animation programs at Capilano University, providing administrative support for the students and faculty. She is the friendly voice you’ll talk to when you phone in for information and she is always eager to help new and returning students. Jane has a large number of responsibilities from dealing with applications and request for program information to organizing events. If you need information about the animation programs, Jane is the first person to contact!
2D Animation & Visual Development Faculty
Don Perro – Program Coordinator and Instructor
Don founded Capilano’s animation department in 1994 after working in the industry as an animator, character designer, storyboard artist and director in Canada and Europe. Teaching animation has always been Don’s passion and he loves his job, working intensively with first year students in animation and design and continuing as an adviser to the second year students in animation and portfolio production courses. Before Capilano, Don assisted in the design and creation of Algonquin College’s Animation program in Ottawa. In the past 10 years, he has developed animation curriculum for universities and institutions in Canada, Mexico, China and Malaysia. Don continues to work in the animation industry as a designer and consultant.
Florian Wagner – 2nd Year Animation Instructor
A graduate of Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg’s Institute of Animation and Visual Effects in Ludwigsburg, Germany, Florian has worked in the animation industry all over the world. He has contributed to 19 feature films ranging from independent productions to full-scale feature films for Universal Pictures and Walt Disney Animation and has directed broadcast television productions for north american and international markets. He frequently teaches courses on advanced character animation at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg and The Animation Workshop in Viborg, Denmark. Florian is currently working as director at Bardel Entertainment in Vancouver.
Moh Ghoreishi – Life Drawing and Layout Design Instructor
Moh is our master life drawing guru and has been with the program since it began. Moh studied animation at Sheridan College and Algonquin College and has worked as a layout artist and storyboard artist in the industry however his passion is life drawing. Moh is responsible for the high quality of life drawing that can be found in all our graduates’ portfolios. His love of life drawing is contagious! Moh also teaches Life Drawing in our Continuing Education department for prospective applicants to the Commercial Animation program.
Michael van Den Bos – History of Character Animation Instructor
Michael van den Bos has worked in the Vancouver animation industry for 22 years. For 18 of those years, Michael was a producer of animated theatrical short films, television commercials, television specials (Gary Larson’s Tales from the Far Side) and a television series (Being Ian). Michael was the head producer for Marv Newland’s (Bambi Meets Godzilla, Anijam, Black Hula) International Rocketship and a member of the producing team at Studio B Productions (now DHX Media). Michael has been teaching film courses in Vancouver since 1997, including: Film Theory and Visual Storytelling at the Vancouver Film School; Film History at Pacific Audio Visual Institute, and the History of Character Animation at Capilano University. Michael writes a bi-monthly column about the movies for the print magazine, Vancouver View, and for his website, “Movie Mad”. Michael is also a recurring host of Vancouver’s Pacific Cinematheque “Silver Screen” series, where he introduces classic Hollywood motion pictures.
Andy Bartlett – Layout Design Instructor
Andy has extensive experience as an animator, storyboard artist, designer and director designer. Andy studied at Sheridan College and has worked on a variety of animated films such as The Ren and Stimpy Show, Gary Larson’s Tales From the Far Side, and feature films including Tank Girl, Asterix vs. Caesar and the Care Bears Movie.
Dwayne Beaver – Communications Instructor
Dwayne is an award-winning writer and director/producer of live action films,whose feature film drama ‘The Rhino Brothers’ garnered numerous awards and full star reviews. Dwayne teaches the Communications for Animation course, which focuses on screenwriting and concept presentation skills.
3D Animation for Film and Games Faculty
Craig Simmons – 3D Animation Program Coordinator and Instructor
Diploma Digital Art & Design, Diploma Fine Arts (Thompson Rivers University), Certified Instructor Development (NewBrunswick)
Craig is a graduate of the Thomson Rivers University with diplomas in Digital Art & Design and Fine Arts. For more than twenty years Craig has worked as a 3D artist, designer, animator, and instructor, owned a design studio and developed numerous successful animation training programs in British Columbia and New Brunswick. As a professional artist he has worked on a large variety of projects from multimedia to television to virtual reality. Craig is currently responsible for coordinating the 3D Animation for Film and Games program and the summer Animation Fundamentals intensive program and enjoys helping students achieve their creative dreams and aspirations. He is passionate about teaching art and design with a focus on Modeling, Sculpting, Texturing, Concept Art and Digital Painting. He teaches in the 3D Animation, Digital Visual Effects and 2D Animation programs.
Bryon Leboe – Concept Art and Design Instructor
Byron is one of the first graduates of the 2D Animation program at Capilano University. Byron has been working in the animation industry as a concept artist and designer since 2000 at many of the local studios in Vancouver including Nerd Corps, Atomic Cartoons, Rainmaker Entertainment and Studio B. He is currently freelancing as a concept artist and designer.
Adam Garland – 3D Generalist and Lab Supervisor
Adam is a graduate of the Digital Animation program at Capilano University. He has over 15 years of experience dealing with computer technology and computer graphics. As a lab supervisor, Adam’s primary responsibility is to keep the labs in tip-top shape and to assist students with their projects. He lends a helping hand wherever it is needed. Adam is currently freelancing for the game industry as an artist and animator as well as teaching in both the 3D Animation and Digital Visual Effects programs.
Anton Glukhovsky – 3D Generalist and Lab Supervisor
Anton is a gifted 3D artist and one of our lab supervisors. He is a graduate of our 3D Animation program and currently works at Electronic Arts as a character modeller and texture artist. He is available after hours during the week to help supervise students with their projects, offering guidance, troubleshooting and advice.
Seng Lau – 3D Animation Instructor
Seng is a graduate of the Commercial and Digital Animation programs at Capilano University. Seng has been working in the animation industry for more than 8 years in 2D and 3D animation. Seng has a wealth of experience in feature film, television and game animation and has worked at several animation studios including Next Level Games, Relic Entertainment, Rainmaker Entertainment and Studio B Productions. Seng is currently working as an animator at MPC on feature films in Vancouver.
Adam Sale – 3D Animation and Rigging Instructor
Autodesk Master, Certified Autodesk Instructor, Certificate 3D Animation & Digital Effects (Vancouver Film School)
Adam co-founded Joncrow Entertainment in 1998. The company has serviced a varied portfolio of corporate clients in Film, Broadcast, Print and Games; Bardel Entertainment, Autodesk, Avid Inc., 3dTutorial.com, EA, BCAA, Traction Creative, Just Leap In, Mercury Filmworks, Scorched Wood, Digital Alchemy, Honkworm International, Nightfall Productions, and more. Adam is a master Autodesk user and has provided more than 130 hours of intermediate to advanced video training content aimed at studio artists using Autodesk products.
Adam works primarily as an animation, rigging and effects portfolio specialist. He works with local industry providing internal education and training. To date, he has worked with student-artists on more than 1300 student films and portfolios. Adam is responsible for teaching Technical Direction and Rigging courses in the 3D Animation program.
